Active Investment, Liquidity Externalities, and Markets for Information

چکیده

Informed investors are a source of illiquidity, but those pursuing di¤erently informed strategies also generate quasi -noise trading. Quasi-noise trading creates non-monotonic externalities in information choice that shape the composition of active investment and that in‡uence investor herding, liquidity spirals, asset comovement, along with the information content of prices. These externalities also a¤ect information markets. An information vendor with market power expands sales only to monopolize investor attention, which can make prices less informative. By contrast, vendor competition boosts quasi-noise trading, which promotes investor diversity. Finally, selling information can be a means to create liquidity for proprietary trades. Liquidity Externalities and Information Spillover between the Equity and Corporate Bond Markets: An Empirical Study

Information spillover and liquidity externality across securities is of practical importance to both practitioners and policy makers. We empirically examine how information spillover facilitates liquidity externalities between the equity and corporate bond markets. An event study was conducted by comparing the change of liquidity of stocks whose corporate bonds are TRACE-eligible with that of n...

Liquidity Externalities and Adverse Selection: Evidence from Trading after Hours

This paper examines liquidity externalities by analyzing trading costs after hours. There is less than 1/20 as many trades per unit time after hours as during the trading day. The reduced trading activity results in substantially higher trading costs: quoted and effective spreads are three to four times larger than during the trading day. The higher spreads reflect greater adverse selection and...

Liquidity Dynamics across Public and Private Markets

In this paper we investigate cross-asset liquidity between equity markets and REITs and between REITs and private real estate markets. While many studies have investigated REIT liquidity, and there is an emerging interest in liquidity in the private real estate markets, there appears to be little knowledge of the dynamics of cross-market liquidity. We find lower levels of liquidity for REITs co...

Bank Regulation under Fire Sale Externalities

We examine the optimal design of and interaction between capital and liquidity regulations. Banks, not internalizing fire sale externalities, overinvest in risky assets and underinvest in liquid assets in the competitive equilibrium. Capital requirements can alleviate the inefficiency, but banks respond by decreasing their liquidity ratios. When capital requirements are the only available tool,...

Self-fulfilling Liquidity Dry-ups

Secondary markets for long-term assets might be illiquid due to adverse selection. In a model in which moral hazard is confined to project initiation, I find that: (1) when agents expect a liquidity dry-up on such markets, they optimally choose to self-insure through the hoarding of non-productive but liquid assets; (2) such a response has negative externalities as it reduces ex-post market par...
